2017 APPL TESTING
Last year, our students piloted ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) in 5th Grade from American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
AAPPL Measure is a performance-based assessment whose tasks are linked to the 5C’s of the National Standards for Language Learning (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities) and address the communication modes defined by the Standards. It consists of four components: Interpersonal Listening/Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Reading, and Interpretive Listening.
The majority of our students fall in N4 or above in listening and speaking. For reading and writing, the majority of our students fall in N3 or above. The purpose of this assessment is for teachers to collect data, modify instruction and improve our program and students’ language learning.
Based on ACTFL’s Performance Descriptors for Language Learners and interviews of other Mandarin programs, when students are leaving elementary level, our recommended target is between novice high and intermediate low N4 for all skills.
